We are offering for sale a novelty silver sailor's cap which mimics the famous jockey cap style of caddy spoon and has a special significance for caddy spoon collectors. The spoon was commissioned by the Society of Caddy Spoon Collectors to commemorate the life of Captain John D Norie. John Norie was the founder of the Society and wrote the primary reference book on the subject - "Caddy Spoons: An Illustrated Guide". The nautical theme is appropriate as Norie was as a navigational pilot for Trinity House during his working life. This spoon has a good hefty feel in the hand and is in excellent condition. It is engraved to the interior with "12 09 63" the date of the first meeting of the Society of Caddy Spoon Collectors, "JDN" - Norie's initials and "12 09 02... We are offering for sale a very early and rare example of a twin compartment vesta case. The larger compartment keeps the matches safe and the other acts as tinder box with a small hole for cutting (cutting action caused by the closing of the lid). Nathaniel Mills is not noted for his production of vesta cases, because his working period came to an end just at the beginning of matchsafe production. This box has all the typical features of high quality Nat Mills production - flush hinge, beautiful engine turned decoration to top and base (to prevent the unsightly affects of finger prints) and attractive floral engraving to the sides. The cover is engraved with the name of the original owner to the cartouche "O Phillpotts R.W.Y. Club, Plymouth". A fine, early ...
